Many believe that the classic Night Court was created as a vehicle for Harry Anderson, given that the central character of Judge Harry Stone was, like Anderson, an avid fan of jazz legend Mel Torme and a talented magician. This was purely coincidental, according to Night Court creator Reinhold Weege, but the connection between Anderson and the classic courtroom comedy is so strong that the new Night Court reboot addressed the absence of both Anderson and Stone.

The Night Court reboot centers around rookie judge Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch), Harry Stone’s daughter, who has just been assigned to her father’s former bench. Harry Stone’s death is confirmed about halfway through the pilot, after Abby looks up her father’s old colleague and friend, Dan Fielding (John Larroquette), who is still living in New York City. Dan is quick to express his sorrow at Harry’s Stone’s passing when Abby introduces herself.
The specific details of Harry Stone’s death and his history after the Night Court finale are not given. Dan says that he and Harry lost touch over the years, but that he never stopped respecting him. Abby confirms that Harry felt the same way and that he had told her stories about Dan and their time working together. It was these stories that inspired Abby to look Dan up when her court needs a new public defender, hoping that he might help her inject some of her father’s brand of idealism into her cynical and complacent staff.

Abby muses that “anyone who worked with my dad moved on,” which leaves room for future episodes to bring those characters in.
Along with John Larroquette starring in the Night Court reboots alongside the new cast, Marsha Warfield reprised her role of Roz Russell from the original series in a season 2 cameo. Unfortunately, the show will be unable to feature several key cast members from the original as Charles Robinson, Markie Post, and Richard Moll have all since passed away. However, like the reference to Harry Anderson as Harry Stone, the reboot could pay tribute to the late stars of Night Court.
